Partial Discharge Diagnosis of Medium Voltage Power Cables

In this paper, the basic principles of partial discharges (PD) are described, including off- line and on-line methods and the basic concepts for understanding and using aforementioned approaches are clarified. Considering the large number of cables in the distribution network, it is unrealistic to expect all cables to be analyzed in detail. For this purpose it is useful to use a hand-held PD detector to make online pre-selection of cables for a more detailed off-line diagnostic analysis. Selected sections of the distribution grid are disconnected and analyzed in detail using off- line method. PD in the cable can be located by analyzing the measured data. Other diagnostic methods provide general insight into the state of insulation while PD enables localization of the malfunction section. In this way a badly made junction or cable termination can be located and preventively replaced.
