Non-native tree species: Strategies for Sustainable Management in Europe

We analyzed the prospects and challenges for non-native tree species (NNTS) in Southeast Europe (SEE) using the strenghts (S) - weaknesses (W) - opportunities (O) - threats (T) approach in combination with Analytic Hierarchy Process. We used preference data from three groups of opinion leaders (researchers, practitioners and decision-makers) with extensive knowledge on the silviculture, ecology and impact of climate change on NNTS in SEE. 72 people were included in research. Results reveal that strenghts and opportunities for all three analysed elements outweight their weaknesses and threats. The participants perceive that in the segment of Ecology of NNTS dominant SO are issues such as: potential for phytoremediation of polluted soils, soil erosion control and rehabilitation of highly degraded lands, carbon sequerstation and use of NNTS to gill the gaps after disturbances, quicker adaptation to changing ecological conditions, enhancement of soil fertility, cover all ecological characteristics as well as broad usage in highly degraded land, fast growing NNTS species for biomass production, good adaptation to shallow soils and drought of some species. Inn the segment of Silviculture SO, key elements are: high productivity, valuable wood assortments, adaptaiton to afforestation of degraded lands, gap filling in forest ecosystems after the loss of native tree species, creation of better options for stability at landscape level, higher volume growth of NNTS compared to native species.

Prospects and challenges of non native tree species, strenghts, opportunities, threaths.
