For the Sake of Souls and Sisterhood: Founding Nunneries by Noble Women of Zadar
The female Benedictines monasteries in Dalmatia fell much less behind new mendicant orders than its male counterparts during the Later Middle Ages. By looking and comparing two examples of foundations of Benedictine nunneries in Zadar - the first one of St. Mary in the beginning of Benedictine female foundations in the eleventh century and the second one of St. Catherine at the end of the fourteenth century, the questions of function they provided for their urban communities are addressed. Both nunneries were carefully planned and executed foundations by distinguished female individuals, but welcomed by the governing elites of the city as valuable institutions of common good and the marks of identity of its social groups.
