Blood levels of glucose, NEFA, lactate and glutathione in iron deficiency anemia of pigs
The treatment of newborn pigs with supplemental iron is common procedure utilized to prevent anemia. In this study the development of postnatal anemia in piglets was studied, and the preventive effect of iron dextran was estimated. Another objective of the present work was to examine weather iron deficency in pigs influence some biochemical constituents of blood which are indicators of carbohydrate and lipid metabolism. It has been concluded that the increased blood glucose level in anemic pigs is probably more related to tissue iron deficiency than to diminished oxygen delivery because of anemia, since the iron-restricted pigs developed only moderate anemia in the life period when their serum iron decreased dramatically.
