Economic Development in Croatia and Policy Challenges
Croatia had at the beginning of the transition a relatively good starting position: the economy was relatively efficient and open, workforce well educated, and consequently the life standard was relatively high. Because of the war the initial drop in economic activity was even higher than in other transitional countries. After 1994, the economy began to grow again at relatively high growth rates. Banking sector was successfully restructured and is now mainly owned by foreigners. In the future the macroeconomic policy will be aimed to lowering now relatively high fiscal deficit, further lowering the balance-of-payment deficit and attracting more direct and portfolio foreign investment
