Influence of selected environmental factors on thyroid function
Objective: Thyroid metabolic hormones, thyroxine (T4) and triiodothyronine (T3), play an important role in basal metabolism and function of almost all tissues and systems in human body. Variations in thyroid hormone levels are influenced by genetic, epigenetic and environmental factors. The aim of this study was to identify environmental factors underlying thyroid function by studying T4 and T3 hormone levels in healthy individuals. Methods: Thyroid hormones measured in plasma of 1012 participants from Split, Croatia (aged 18- 85), were determined by immunoassay method. Individuals who were treated for thyroid disease, 41 of them, were excluded from the study. To assess the influence of various environmental factors on thyroid function nonparametric tests were used due to non-normal distribution of T4 and T3 levels. Results: Positive correlation between T4 and T3 levels was observed (ρ=0.263, p<0.001). T4 and T3 values showed association with gender and age, respectively. T4 levels were significantly higher in females than males (p=0.05) and T3 values were highest up to 30 and the lowest between 30 and 60 years (p=0.038). T3 levels showed negative association with BMI (p=0.029) among males, while T4 levels were associated with hypertension among females (p=0.03). Level of sport activity was also associated with T4 levels (p=0.008). Among dietary habits, consumption of yoghurt showed association with T3 (p=0.024) while T4 levels were associated with consumption of venison (p=0.016) and marmalade (p=0.037). Conclusion: These results indicate that lifestyle and environmental factors have influence on T4 and T3 levels in general population.
