Studies on Body Image in Adults with Non-BED Overweight/Obesity

Body image dissatisfaction is one of the most often researched correlates of overweight and obesity, which is not surprising. In today’s social environment, individuals with obesity are viewed as extremely unattractive, so it is quite understandable that higher weight persons have internalized the negative attitudes of the surroundings, and that such attitudes have become a regular part of their self-evaluation. Some persons with obesity are more likely to distort their body size, although that is not the rule ; however, they are generally very dissatisfied with their appearance and body image, and they often avoid social situations in which they have to compare themselves with normal-weight persons. This chapter presents studies on the body image of persons with overweight/obesity not associated with binge eating disorder (non-BED). Special emphasis is given to research related to risk factors in negative body image development, assessment methods, and treatments.
