Grammar Schools and Other 4-Year High Schools: Differences in Student Profiles and Schools' Social Capital
The aim of this research was to examine differences between students who attended grammar schools and those who attended other 4-year high schools with respect to: educational achievements (average grade in high-school, average grade in the previous year of study, and grade on the state graduation examination ), social background (human capital which refers to the level of education of family members, family social capital which refers to the quality of family relationships and financial capital), motivation in selecting the program of study (i.e. the extent to which students were intrinsically motivated and the extent to which the faculty they enrolled was their first, second or even third choice), social capital available in schools (refers to the quality of relationships with other students in the classroom and school employees). For that purpose a quantitative research was employed. Sample includes students of the University of Zagreb (N=429). Welch t-test was applied and the results show that former grammar school students, on average, have more educated parents, better financial situation in the family, a higher level of family social capital and better grade-point average in the previous year of study which is in accordance with the theory of social reproduction (Bourdieu, 1986). However, differences in social capital of high schools were not observed so on the base of this research we cannot make assumptions on its role in reducing/increasing social inequalities
