Influence of bud load and rootstock on caracteristics of Istrian malvasia on Cordon with shortcutting

The objective of this research was to determine the optimal bud load which provides the optimal yield for obtaining quality wines on the cordon with short cutting and to determine which of the two rootstock, 420A or Kobber 5BB, is more suitable for achieving that objective. We have set a three-year experiment in a vineyard established in 1993 in Persurici, 10 kilometers north-west from Porex, on gently sloping ground, facing South, at the altitude of 175 m above sea level, whitout irrigation. We have set the experiment in a completely random pattern, by choosing 5 well-balanced vines with three repetitions for the bud load of 30, 35 and 40 buds per vine or 85 000, 100 000 and 115 000 buds per hectare, on both rootstock respectively. After the vegetation had started, on the growt of 15-20 cm, we counted green shoots sprung out and during the harvest we counted and weighed cluster per vine and took samples for determining the amount of soluble solids, acids and pH for every repetition, bud load and rootstock respectively, in total 18 example. From the data on number and weight of the clusters, we came up with the weight of a single cluster. The amount of soluble solids has been established with the help of the Klosterneurger must scale ; the total amount of acid has been established by the NaOH neutralization method with brom-timol blue as indicator. Average values were compared to ANOVA test by the Student-Newman-Keulse method for comparing average values, for p=0.05 rank. Istrian Malvasia on cordon with short cutting high yield of considerable quality for all three years in question, which proves the suitability of the growing pattern in question for Istrian Malvasia in Istria. The bud load, 30, 35 and 40 buds per vine, or 85 000, 100 000 and 115 000 buds per hectare, had a considerable impact only on the number of clusters while yield of grapes per vine had no significant influence. The optimal bud load, with reference to yield attained and grape quality, is 35 buds, then 35 buds per vine and the least acceptable bud load was that of 40 buds per vine. Both of the rootstock tested showed good production results though their differences have been statistically significant. Kobber 5BB rootstock, being more robust and sturdier, provided higher yield with higher amount of soluble solids but with smaller quantities of acids and higher pH readings, which is a sign of grapes of worse quality in the production of fresher wines, especially sparkling wines/champagnes. Rootstock 420A showed more appropriate, with reference to the number of shoots developing from the real bud and the bud load of 35 buds per vine provided the most acceptable results. According to above presented results, both rootstock are very suitable for growing Istrian Malvasia on cordon with shortcutting. Giving preference to one of them depends on the type of wine we wish to produce from the grapes
