Food biotechnology and biotechnological foods

Great deal of efforts have been invested in gathering all stakeholders - academia, SMEs, industry, regional and local authorities, and organising network activities focused on developing sustainable bio-based value chains in Europe. Several key issues for sustainability of the European based value chains are identified, such as: (i) land availability for terrestrial biomass feedstock production ; (ii) incomplete utilization and processing of conventional feedstocks, residues, side streams and waste, and (iii) enormous remaining potential of seas and ocean. Intensification of land use ; advanced ICT at plant level ; new and improved crops produced with less fertilisers, protectants, water and logistics ; and employment of multi-crop systems will enable year-round supply of biorefineries and increase their productivity, resource and energy efficiency. Modern biotechnology offers innovative solutions creating highly productive multi-value chains to be pursued by multiple crossovers between unsustainable linear production models and also cascade principle in conversion of traditional but also un- and underexploited feedstocks. Aquatic feedstocks have immense possibilities for production of an array of high added-value ingredients, primarily proteins, for use in food and feed and in other bio-based industries. Co- production of food, feed and other industrial products represents complex systems of bioprocesses and procedures embedded within solid biorefineries. The bioprocesses will be carried out by new robust biocatalyst adapted to high concentrations of feedstocks (containing unusual substrates) and products under industrial conditions and at the scale. Procedures for feedstocks pretreatment and downstream processing should be performed by consuming minimal quantities of water and energy and fully integrated in continuous (bio)process systems. All (new) products from such systems, especially drop-in products, and new product functionalities have to meet all policy and regulatory requirements, be price- competitive, and recognised by end-users.
