CIAM: The case for spatio-temporal analyses of architectural networks

The ART NET project focuses on the organization and the communication models supporting artists’ and architects’ networks and collaborative practices of the 20th and 21st century. The aim of the project is to develop a new research methodology in the realm of digital history of art and architecture, supported by the new information infrastructure organized in the integrated information system (CAN_IS). The system includes the core CAN_IS data base, tools for advanced text analysis (Text Explorer) and a recently prototyped interface for collaborative visualisation of extensive data collections of artists and architects, their social relations and related theoretical concepts. Because of its model of organization and international scope, Congrès internationaux d'architecture modern (CIAM) presents a substantial case to examine the possibilities of CAN_IS application in processing large quantities of digitized archival documents and presentation of extracted data through dynamic network visualizations. This line of investigation is directed towards visualization of CIAM’s network spatio-temporal and conceptual properties, i.e. towards visualization of the encounters among architects, relations between different architectural concepts and their theoretical/historical resonances with the major CIAM events, specifically the fourth (1933) and the fifth (1937) CIAM conferences. By visualising CIAM as a spatio-temporal network, we argue that the fusion between digital and traditional research methods should not be understood in terms of a digital/spatial “turn” in humanities, but rather as a new epistemological paradigm which opens a plethora of theoretical questions and new opportunities for both collaborative digital research and digital publishing.
