Nursery production of european beech seedlings in Croatia during the last 10 years

Forests and forest land are of interest for the Republic of Croatia, and posses it's special protection. Protection is, among other activities, evident through sustainable forest management, which is facing in the last few years, in the world as well as in Croatia, a numerous challenges. There is whole variety of negative impacts present in forest ecosystems, such as forest fires, changed pest dynamics and their predators, changed climate conditions (e.g. climatic disturbances, changed rainfall and temperature dynamics, harmful chemical depositions, etc.), which result with forest dieback and lower natural regeneration success. Success of natural regeneration should, by all means, influence nursery production dynamics and the need of nursery production enhancement if we want to secure optimal conditions for artificial regeneration in due time. European beech, the species with the biggest share in Croatia (35% share by volume of round timber) hasn't got, up to recently, considerable problems regarding natural regeneration. Nevertheless, negative impacts did not avoid beech forests in Croatia. Problems with natural regeneration have been observed in the recent time as a result of synergic influence of changed site conditions, as well as management activities which have been conducted during whole rotation period. Currently, 47 nurseries for production of forest reproductive material are registrated in Croatia, in 16 of which beech seedling have been produced in the last 10 years. In this paper trend and dynamics of beech seedlings production will be compared with changes in natural regeneration of beech stands. Beech seedlings production in the last 10 years (2000-2009.) is presented, according to each nursery, nursery ownership, geographical placement, and type of seedlings (bare or balled rooted), with special regard to it’s share in total number of produced seedlings. Quantity and quality of produced reproductive material considerably varies from year to year and among nurseries. All analyzed parameters point to significant importance of beech seedlings production, and the sole need of production dynamics harmonization with concrete needs in practice.
