RECOGNIZING MIC THREAT IN AGEING CRUDE OIL PIPELINES

In ageing crude oil pipelines, after decades of problem-free operation, corrosion may become a serious threat due to accumulated effects of relatively slow corrosion processes, but also due to the recent appearance of “opportunity crudes”, preferred by refineries practising feedstock flexibility by which their profitability is significantly increased. As a consequence, pipeline operators are faced with the increased complexity of the transport process and sometimes a need for stretching the allowable limits of total sulphur content and basic sediment and water content of crude oil, transporting potentially more corrosive oils than before. Fear from H2S, which is not routinely measured and usually not restricted, may arise from unusually high hydrogen sulphide content measured for HSE reasons in the vapour phase of incoming tankers carrying “opportunity crudes”. It is therefore of utmost importance to determine the primary corrosion threat and establish a continuous monitoring process which would detect eventual corrosion upsets. This paper discusses typical MIC patterns of data that may be expected from the successive intelligent pig runs, from on-line real-time monitoring by employing LPR and hydrogen probes, in-line monitoring by ladder and floating coupons and off-line monitoring by extensive laboratory analysis of oil and of water separated from oil resulting in bacteria count, Langelier, Riznar, Puckorius and Larson & Scold indices calculation, and liquid phase H2S determination. Corrosion rates may be estimated from polarization and impedance measurements in separated water and from general and localized corrosion loss observed on coupons.
