Binomials in EU Competition Law
While binomial expressions have been on the agenda of many scholars interested in legal English, they haven’t been given significant attention in a bilingual corpus-based perspective, especially where one of the languages involved in the study is a language of lesser diffusion. Furthermore, studies into binomial expressions in hybrid languages are non-existent. This study thus aims to fill this gap by investigating binomial expressions in two parallel corpora of EU competition law. It focuses on the semantic relationship between the constituents so as to account for the deletions in the language which does not dispose of the same binomial structures. Since EU law in general and EU legal translation in particular is characterized by hybridity, an attempt is made to detect non-typical binomials. Additionally, the chapter also investigates whether these binomials, although some of them invented for the purpose of conveying the meaning of the concepts of EU law, can still be considered more idiomatic in one language than in the other.
