The Future (of) Building

Most of the contemporary buildings have the same role the traditional buildings had. Furthermore, most of the new buildings use traditional materials and technologies. Until recently, construction industry was slow to accept the new trends, usually because of the strict and rigid legislative. However, the new materials are already available, and the new technologies are also closer to construction mainstream. Buildings are on the way to become more than just passive shelters for their occupants. Traditional buildings are full of unused resources, which can be used to generate new resources or which can be recycled. Buildings should become more similar to facilities for recycling or production in the future. One aspect which will also become important in the future is sharing function, when a building will also be place of exchange, similar to a hub connected to other such buildings over a network. But tangible resources are not the only important ones. With digital technology, especially information technology in the field of IoT, big data, production of data and other information about buildings and their inhabitants becomes more and more relevant. Buildings, environments, but also inhabitants can be equipped with simple sensors, which collect data for further use, either for more comfort, more security, but also for less privacy. Such data can be used to increase a building’s performance, but also focused on user, to provide healthier or user- friendly living environment. Generating, but also sharing, such data for other kinds of use can be useful to predict the future use, optimize future environments. However, this would require some other technologies too. We can expect, in the near future, that buildings would change from passive collection of materials in the form of a shelter, to more sophisticated devices to generate, collect and share various resources about themselves and their inhabitants. Even today, we can find technologies which can have significant impact on buildings of the future. These technologies are, at the moment, maybe, part of different research fields, and we can expect better integration in the future. This can bring about more efficient energy usage, more comfortable living, but it can also contribute to the greater fear of technology. To return to the conclusion, new technologies and materials have been integrated into building processes slowly for a variety of reasons, and we can expect that they will eventually enter the mainstream. However, campuses and universities are places where such living laboratories can be used to develop and test different levels of technology integration.
