Institutions and nation-building: Croatian autonomy 1868 - 1918
Lecture presented research model for examination of the role of institutions in nation-building, based on thesis of A. Smith, R. Brubbaker, R. Bendix, T. H. Marshall, G. Jellinek. Iceland's nation-building was taken as a model of continuos development from authonomy to statehood on the basis of institution-building, and R. Brubaker's construction of French and German types of citizenship as models of nations. On this basis author concluded that Croatian way toward statehood based on institution-building could not be achieved and it was in a way interrupted in the era of the ban Khuen-Hedervary. Author also concluded that reforms undertaken in the era of the ban Mažuranić were attempted to shaping of the Croatian nation closer to the French than to the German model.
