Zagreb/Agram als zeremonieller Raum 1895: Kaiser Franz Joseph und dynastische Repräsentation

In 1895, awaiting the long anticipated royal visit of Emperor Francis Joseph I, the city of Zagreb was transformed into a giant ceremonial space marked by architecture as well as festive and patriotic decorations, evoking different political and cultural symbolisms. Combined with the strict official program of the three- day visit these components not only defined the festivities visually, but also helped organizing space for the masses that came to the city (citizens, visitors from all over Croatia-Slavonia, Dalmatia, Istria, Hungary, etc.) as well as preparing the patriotic mind frame of the jubilant crowds that awaited their Emperor. Yet, different visions of Empire, state and patriotism collided with each other on several official or inofficial levels, turning the celebratory ‘parade of culture’ designed by Banus Károly Khuen-Héderváry with the intention to present the success of his rule in Croatia- Slavonia as well as the stability of the dualist system in general, into a political affair with dire consequences.
