Soil Acidification and Cation Leaching Under 20 Years of Different Nitrogen Fertilization

The results of many studies indicate that long- term application of ammonium-based fertilisers cause soil acidification due to the proton release during the nitrification process or because nitrogen leaching. To achieve and maintain soil electrical balance positively charged cations can also leached along with nitrate-nitrogen. Objectives of this study were to quantify contribution of 20-years nitrogen fertilization to soil acidification and losses of sodium and calcium via drainage outflow in a field experiment with different nitrogen rates (0, 100, 200, 300 kgN/ha). Investigation was carried out on stationary field trial (drained Stagnosols) in central part of Croatia. Two drainpipes are embedded in the area of each fertilizing treatment. Soil sampling (0-30 cm) was conducted every year after the harvest while in the periods with drainage discharge water samples were taken on a daily basis. Results reviled that in average from 1996-2016 compared to the control statistical significant decrement of soil pHKCl (ΔpH 0.82) and increment of calcium concentration in water (Δc 23.5 mg/L) was recorded on treatment with 200 kgN/ha. Sodium in water varied from 2.53 mg/L in 2012 to 129.7 mg/L in 2014. The highest average concentration for 20 years (25.6 mg Na+/L) was recorded on treatment with 300 kgN/ha.
