Croatian architects as experts of Yugoslav technical assistance in Africa - From 'authorities' to 'volunteers'
The presentation analyzes the working domain of architects employed as experts of technical assistance and their eventual influence on architecture and urban planning in Africa. Based on the bilateral agreements between Yugoslavia and African countries, first experts of Yugoslav technical assistance arrived in Africa in mid- 1950s. The very process of technical cooperation had its political and economic goals and, in line with the ambitions of Yugoslav diplomacy, the duty was entrusted to individuals with approved professional qualifications as well as political legitimacy. By perceiving the process of technical cooperation from political and economic as well as professional point of view, the presentation argues of its possibility to provide a multiple-layered platform for successful transnational and transcultural communication.
