The associations between diet inflammatory potential and the nutritional status of the women
Diet has potential to act pro-inflammatory and anti-inflammatory. This study aimed to investigate the association between Dietary Inflammatory Index (DII) as indicator of diet inflammatory potential and nutritional status among 400 women from city Rijeka. A cross sectional study among 142 normal weight, 192 overweight and 66 obese women aged 40- 70 years estimated their dietary habits with sq- FFQ. DII was calculated of 37 food parameters. Positive DII score mean more pro-inflammatory diet while negative DII score more anti-inflammatory diet. The associations between DII, diet and nutritional status were investigated by regression analysis. Overweight and obese women had higher DII index score (0.23 and 0.55, respectively) than normal weight women (0.12). Age statistically positively correlated to DII among normal weight (β=0.19, p<0.000) and overweight (β=0.07, p=0.037) women. BMI positively correlated to DII among normal weight women (β=0.11, p=0.021) and negatively among overweight (β=-0.10, p=0.003) and obese women (β=-0.87, p<0.000). Energy (β=2.77, p=0.003), total lipids (β=11.02, p<0.000), SFA (β=0.27, p=0.008), trans-fatty acids (β=0.66, p=0.010), meat and products (β=2.50, p<0.000) and eggs (β=0.17, p=0.049) intake statistically positively correlated to DII among overweight and obese women. Obesity is strongly associated to pro-inflammatory diet, likewise older age of normal weight and overweight women. The anti- inflammatory diet and its health role should be more promoted for obesity and related diseases prevention.
