Adjustment of Rated Current in Design of Synchronous Reluctance Motors Using Axial Scaling and Rewinding
This paper considers the problem of reducing the rated current of a synchronous reluctance motor to match the rated current of commercially available inverter in the case when the motor has a maximized saliency ratio and thus maximized power factor assuming maximum torque per ampere control strategy. It is shown that motor current can be reduced and power factor increased by adjusting the number of turns per coil and the number of parallel paths of the stator winding in combination with scaling of the stack length to retain the same rated voltage and shaft power of the motor. The design trade-offs which emerge in this situation and how they affect the motor performance are explained using an analytical model of the motor with constant winding inductances.
