Effect of high intensity training on mineral content changes in blood and urine of athletes

A high intensity training (HIT) whereby recreational athletes want to achieve all the benefits of training in a short period of time, becomes more popular nowadays. It is considered that expertly led HIT is a safe way to achieve fitness goals in the case of advanced trainees. The present study examines whether changes of mineral and metal concentrations in blood and urine occur due to a short but intense physical activity. Sampling of blood and urine was performed before and after HIT to find out whether acute electrolyte losses are caused by physical effort. Blood samples (24) and urine samples (24) of 12 fitness-active trainees were analyzed during three days and total of 72 blood samples and 72 urine specimens were included in the study. The high intensity training consists of changing the intervals of high loads and intervals of rest. At high intensity intervals, the number of heart beats rate was up to 80% of the maximum heart rate. Blood samples were prepared for analysis by microwave digestion technique. An inconsistent changes of analyte concentrations (mostly increased values) in urine samples were obtained after training. The mentioned increases were in the case of: Mg and Zn (for 11 out of 12 trainees) ; Cu (for 10 trainees) ; K and Fe (for 9 trainees) and Na and Ca (for 5 trainees). On the other side, drillful exercises carried out by the trainees had not significantly changed the concentrations of tested minerals in the blood. The character of metal concentrations variations in blood could not indicate the general conclusion of whether a constant decrease or increase has been occurred. Based on this, it can be concluded that a short-time training of high intensity is safe for health of the trainees regarding the loss of minerals.
