The Effect of p–p Interactions on Stability of the NTB phase
The discovery of twist-bend nematic phase (NTB) has sparked a great interest in the scientific community, not only from the fundamental viewpoint but also due to its potential for innovative applications. In addition to theoretical and physical studies, there is significant interest in the molecular features that give rise to this unique phase of matter. Currently, it is generally accepted that the NTB phase is associated with a bent molecular shape although conformational distribution, and intramolecular torsion proved to be important. [3, 4] To obtain material with enhanced properties it is necessary to increase the knowledge on relation between chemical structure and stability of the NTB phase. Here we describe the synthesis and mesomorphic properties of a series naphthyl-based bent- shaped dimers containing variant linking groups. Investigation of mesomorphic properties showed significant stabilization of the NTB phase in naphtyl-based compounds compared to corresponding pheny-based dimers in particularly those with enthenyl linking group. The observed mesogenic behaviour in relation to the electronic structure of mesogenic unit and the central linkage group will be discussed.
