Nail (QI:346 clou): an onomasiological analysis
There was no PIE word for the notion of „nail“ nor can a common semantic basis be recognized according to attested terms in various European languages of today. The problem with the reconstruction of PIE word for „nail“ is that it is not certain, based on archaeological findings, that nails were being used in Neolithic period. The words for „nail“ in European languages are often derived from roots that had other original meaning.
