Towards a Smart Jacket: Integration of Electronics Challenge
In this presentation, we are going to discuss issues encountered while searching for a good solution to embed desired electronics into a textile jacket, which would later deserve to be referred to as a smart jacket. The talk will include aspects of antenna design and placement, connection to a power supply and realization of a power supply, followed by a transceiver circuit that would enable a full-duplex communication, and lastly a temperature sensor circuit. Wearable antenna design will be outlined, followed by a discussion on the practical integration of the antenna into a jacket, body protection from a possibly excessive radiation towards the body, antenna design issues at lower frequencies, and its connection to a power supply and the transceiver. Next, an early, Arduino-based, design of a full-duplex transceiver circuits will be shown and the issues faced with this commented on. Lastly, we will present a circuit built for body temperature measurement and publishing on a designated IP address, as an early attempt to create a real- time communication with a remote center. All of the aforementioned circuits are subject to further design improvements, on-field testing and mutual integration of their components. Variants of potential solutions will be commented on in light of their technological advances, integration compactness, and mechanical robustness.
