Parental and peer rejection as predictors of appearance-based rejection sensitivity
Appearance-based rejection sensitivity is defined as personality-processing system that includes anxious concerns and expectations about being rejected based on one’s physical attractiveness. Appearance-based rejection sensitivity has been found to correlate with conditional parental and peer appearance-based acceptance. It is also known that adults’ remembrance of parental and peer rejection in childhood predicts general rejection sensitivity in adulthood, but there is no evidence for appearance-based rejection sensitivity. Therefore, the aim of this study was to examine whether parental and peer general rejection, as well as rejection based on appearance, predicted appearance-based rejection sensitivity. The sample consisted of 417 students (M age = 20.7 years) from Croatia. They filled in the Adult Parental Acceptance-Rejection Questionnaire (Adult PARQ ; mother, father, and best friend version), Parental and Peer Conditional Acceptance based on Appearance Scale, Appearance-Rejection Sensitivity Questionnaire, and sociodemographic questionnaire. Hierarchical regression analysis showed that 12.2% of the variance in appearance-based rejection sensitivity could be explained by studied predictors. Body mass index and female gender, in the first step, explained 5.9% of the variance. Conditional maternal and peers’ acceptance based on appearance, in the second step, explained additional 3.4% of the variance. In the third step, additional 2.9% of the variance was explained, with general interpersonal rejection from a friend as a significant predictor. These results extend previous findings on parental and peer interpersonal rejection and conditional acceptance based on appearance in relation to appearance-based rejection sensitivity.
