Stres i prilagodba vojnih kadeta u hrvatskom obrambenom sustavu

This research study applied the theoretical model of stress and coping on the population of Croatian cadets. The study examined how Croatian cadets experience the stress and how they cope with various stressful situations during their first three months in the military. Results suggest a moderately high stressfulness of the situation experienced in the starting period of studies, as well as a law degree of surprise to these situations. An evaluation of possibilities to influence the appearance and outcome of stressful events suggest a generally low degree of controllability of stressful situations during the tested period. Greatest source of stress for Croatian cadets was related to the 1) conditions of the military life that prevented the fulfillment of academic obligations (too little time for studying and a fatigue associated with military training), 2) a transition from the civilian way of life, and 3) academic demands. Examinees estimate that they coped fairly well with the most difficult problems and that they had adjusted well, even though in a portion of examinees a significantly higher level of anxiety and depressive reactions was found. These results have a practical implication because they suggest systematic monitoring of adjustment of Croatian cadets and a need to provide cadets a psychological support. This means taking more proactive approach in the development of cadets’ individual and group efficiencies as well as building cadets’ psychological resilience.
