Mothers Sense of Coherence and Exclusive Breastfeeding at 4 weeks Postpartum.
Sense of coherence (SOC) is seen as a health promoting factor which facilitates successful coping with a given challenge. As such, mothers SOC may be an important psychosocial variable affecting breastfeeding outcome. The aim of the study was to investigate the association between mothers SOC and EBF at 4 weeks postpartum. A cohort sample of 772 breastfeeding women who gave birth to a healthy, singleton, term infant was recruited from a Baby-Friendly hospital in Croatia, between October 2010 and January 2011. In-hospital mothers completed the SOC-13 Scale and a self-report questionnaire on demographic, perinatal and psychosocial variables. At 4 weeks, 663 mothers completed data on their breastfeeding status. High SOC increases the mothers’ likelihood of exclusive breastfeeding at 4 weeks postpartum.
