Offshore Polychaete fauna in the northern Adriatic with trophic characteristic
The North Adriatic offshore Polychaete fauna still is insufficiently known. This is a region of particular biological and hydrographic conditions which differ from other parts of the Adriatic Sea and the Mediterranean. To cover the gaps in our knowledge, the Polychaete fauna has been studied at three biocoenoses. The fauna composition, and species distribution, with regards to sediment characteristics and trophic relations were discussed. The quantitative samples were taken by the Van Veen 0.1m2 grab. The material was treated bay overflow through a 2 mm sieve and preserved in 4% neutralized formol. Basic hydrographical parameters and granulometric analysis of sediments were also considered. A total of 103 species were noted. Out of them, the Protomystides bidentata (Langerhans) was not noted previously in the Adriatic Sea. The biocoenosis of Coastal detritic bottom mixed with ooze had the most species with largest abundances. In the Boicoenosis poor in organic substances and at insignificant sedimentation rates, density of polychaetes populations is small. But this Biocoenosis proved to be the richest in species number. The functional and structural adaptability of the Polychaetes community were mainly influenced bay changes in the sediment characteristics.
