External ventricular derivation vs lumbar puncture cerebral spinal fluid analysis for diagnosis of meningitis in neurosurgical patients
Meningitis in neurosurgical patients is serious postoperative complication that needs early recognition and treatment. Diagnosis of meningitis in the neurosurgical patients might be difficult because of overlapping clinical presentation caused by surgery or trauma. Standard CSF studies are unreliable because of blood caused by subarachnoid haemorrhage (SAH) or surgical trauma. The aim of this retrospective study is to evaluate and compare the diagnostic usefulness of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) obtained from external ventricular derivation (EVD) and lumbar puncture (LP) for detection of postoperative bacterial meningitis.
