Characteristics of table grape varieties grown in Istrian wine region ; The first results

The Istrian wine region is situated in the northwestern part of Croatia, on the Adriatic Sea. Geographically, the Istrian wine region is a peninsula, with a very specific climate condition. Most part of istria have a specific Mediterranean climate with red soils. The central part of peninsula has a continental climate with white soils (flish soils) whereas the northeastern part has a fresh and humid continental climate whit shallow dark soils. The rainfalls differ, from 600 mm in the south to more then 1000 mm in the northeast, with a large temperature altitude difference. The viticulture tradition in Istria is very long. The first document goes bach to the old age, or more precisely to the Roman period. In the whole viticultural tradition in Istria, the growers grew only wine varieties and practically no table grape varieties. For this reason, in the 1997 the Institute for Agriculture and Tourism, Porec, Croatia and Istituto Sperimentale di Viticultura, Conegliano, Veneto and O.I.V. Office, France, started to collaborate on a new rresearch considering the possibility of table grape production within the Istrian wine region. For this research eight table grape varieties were planted in 1997 ; matilde, Victoria, Sultanina and Italia as white, and Perlon, Alfonso Laval and Don mariano as red grapes. One year later, Sublima Seedless, Perlette, Autumn Seedless, Hamburg Muscat, Ruby Seedless, Early Muscat, regina and Cardinal were planted. The plant and row distance was 2.50 m. The training form was the modified Guyot. For the evaluation of different varieties, all production factors such as yiels per vine and per unit of surface, yield of pruned wood, dynamic growth were measured. According to the received results, the most fertile varieties were Italia and Alfon Lavallee, and the most quality varieties were Perlette, cardinal and Italia. With respect to the obtained results, the recommended varieties for the Istrian wine region are Perlette and Italia. The determining factor in the choice of there varieties was their time ripening (1. to 30. August), since in that period there is an increased demand for fresh grape by the summer tourist market.
