Drama in Education Techniques and Methods in Teaching Language in Primary School

In the Republic of Croatia, in the academic year 2018/2019, the implementation of experimental teaching in the first grade of primary school begins according to the new Curriculum (2018), in which the focus of the teaching of the Croatian language is to encourage language activities, the greater role of media culture, and all of it using modern teaching methods, among which the drama activity is especially emphasized. The conducted research (Pavličević-Franić, 2005 ; 2011 ; Velički and Peti Stantić, 2009) show that the use of the game increases concentration, motivation and helps to improve the quality of teaching content. That is why drama techniques and methods are used in teaching with educational goals, among other things, to master the abstract content, such as grammar, and to encourage active speech in mother tongue and foreign language teaching. The drama in education approach to language learning allows spontaneity and liberation from tension (Kodrić, 2011, Slavić and Trešćec, 2014) and thus creates a pleasant and stimulating atmosphere. Since drama plays in language teaching can be used in various ways, the aim of this research is to examine the use of drama in education approaches in teaching native language (Croatian) German and English as a foreign language, especially in teaching grammar and encouraging various forms of oral language expression. The sample consists of German teachers, English teachers, Croatian and class teachers who will fill the online questionnaire for this research. Teachers are expected to differ in their opinion on the use of drama in education approach regarding the subject they teach, the way they perform these activities, and the integration of the given activities into the lesson.
