Swift heavy ion track research at small accelerator facilities: examples from the RBI
Historically, ion track research has been conducted at large accelerator facilities where energies of swift heavy ion beams can easily overcome 100 MeV. Therefore, usual definition of the “swift heavy ion” consists of two requirements: specific kinetic energy above 1 MeV/amu, and ion mass above 20 amu. Recently, this definition has been downgraded to specific kinetic energy of 0.1 MeV/amu and ion mass above 15 amu [1]. This change can still accommodate requirement of dominant contribution of electronic stopping power, having sufficient value to produce ion tracks. While it is true that the values of the track formation thresholds can vary significantly between different materials, in the present contribution we present several examples how the accelerator facility at the Ruđer Bošković Institute in Zagreb has been used for ion track studies close to the ion track formation thresholds. These examples [2-8] will illustrate strategies of making small and medium accelerator facilities well suited for this line of research.
