Trace Evidence of Pottery Forming Techniques: The Early Urnfield Culture Vessels

The paper presents the research results concerning pottery production process that encompasses forming techniques, surface treatments and decoration techniques within the framework of extensive research of the ceramic production during the Bronze Age in the area of northern Croatia. The analysis was conducted on ceramic fragments that, by relative chronology, are dated to the final period of Middle and the beginning of the Late Bronze Age. This period is characterized by the material culture of group Virovitica (15-13 century BC), a representative of early European Urnfield culture in the region. Although the sites with the archaeological material remains that are characteristic to this group are located in the wider area of the Sava and Drava River valleys the research considers the ceramic vessels from settlements discovered within two smaller micro-regions (Turopolje and Podravina). The objective is to identify the characteristics of building and shaping techniques by documenting physical and visible evidence of a specific manufacturing technique that was applied within the prehistoric societies in the region. It will allow us to explain some of the features of a manufacturing process and enable us to understand certain aspects of artisan choices as well as to identify and explain cultural and regional regularities and variability in production systems within the prehistoric communities.
