Influence of different canopy management techniques on production and quality of grape and wine

Canopy management techniques (management of shoots, leaf area, clusters, etc) are some the most important techniques in viticulture for the making of wine of high organoleptic quality and economic rentability. Moreover, from a technicological and scientific point of view, canopy management has an important role in production od different types of wine. In this research, viticulture, oenology and economic results are expressed and obtained after years of research on canopy management, with a particular emphasis on management of shoots and defolation hold in a grape zone. Defolation was done at different periods and with different techniques (Smart-Dyson and Cargnello techniques) on native cultivars and cultivars which were accustomed to the treatments of defolation and especially chosen for this research (malvasia of istria and Chardonna as white cultivars, and hrvatica and Cabernet sauvignon as red cultivars). This research illustrates the advantages of Cargnello techniques compared with Smart-Dyson techbiques, especially from the technical point of view of canopy management. These advantages are expressed in the difference between ebochemical and organoleptic characteristics, and in economic (increase of producer profit) and ecological results (reduction in application of pesticides). Malvasia of Istria and Hrvatica cultivars compared with Chardonnay sauvignon cultivars showed a higher influence of canopy management on quality and quantity of grape and wine.
