Prävalenz der silvatichen Trichinellose beim Schwarzwild in einem Jagdrevier in Ostkroatien und der Stand der Trichinellose bei Hausschweinen und Menschen in dieser Region

The Podunavlje-Podravlje National Game Reserve, situated in the easternmost part of Croatia, is described. Various game species, most commonly, roe deer, wild boar, hare and pheasant, live in the area. During 1999, a survey and counting of the game living in the area were performed. A separate presentation of the 1990-1999 boar pattern indicated that their age and sex structure were consider- ably deteriorated, i. e. their number was half.their pre-war number in the area. The wild boar kill and number of animals examined for trichinellosis at the regional veterinary clinics during the same peri- od are presented. In 1998 and 2000, 1.35% and 0.4% of the wild boars examined were positive for Trichinella respectively. Data on the number of swine killed for household use and in the regional slaughterhouses showed the number of examined animals and rate of Trichinella-positive samples to increase each year, which entailed an increase in the number of people infected with trichinellosis in the area. This number accounted for 75.9% of all trichinellosis affected patients in Croatia in 2000. Patient histories revealed that some used wild boar and other game products in addition to pork, suggesting this as a possible route of infection here.
