Collision Simulation of Composite Patrol High- speed Craft

Structural design codes require to an increasing extent that ships have sufficient capacity to accidental events such as collisions, grounding or impacts from side boarding. The later one is of particular importance for high-speed patrol boats. Classification societies requirements for high- speed composite patrol motorboats to keep all its performances and functions after side boarding, in particular without permanent deformation of the structure, is heavy task to accomplish. In order to bring calculations to reasonable time consumption in preliminary design stage and due to real complexity, relative simple numerical model for nonlinear crash simulation is constructed within LS-DYNA software package. It consists of all structural elements, scantlings and geometry, as real structure but on simple plane geometry. Special attention is put on the choice of material model for nonlinear finite element analysis (NLFEM). Obtained results have preliminary character and purpose of initial scantlings validation on side collision as well as to provide minimal information and possible direction for detailed FEA and optimisation. This is especially important knowing the need for structure as lighter as possible regarding speed and mission of a patrol boat. Results are going to serve as a base for structure topology and scantling optimisation, as well as base for choice of composite materials and laminate plan.
