Intensity of Exploitation and Quality of Inland, Coastal and Island Tourist Destinations in Croatia: An Empirical Insight
Longitudinal data collected during seven-year period of empirical evaluation enabled comparison of the quality of tourist destinations on eleven separate dimensions of the tourism supply chain. Inland, coastal and island destinations were compared and the relationship between tourism intensity measured as a ratio of nights spent at tourist accommodation establishments relative to the total permanent resident population of the area and overall quality ratings was analysed. Results have shown that there is a non-linear relationship between tourism intensity and quality of tourism offer in destinations: low tourism intensity does not influence quality, optimal tourism intensity determines development and quality, while high tourism intensity diminishes quality of destinations. Optimal tourism intensities in inland, coast and island destinations are different, and data analysis provided identification of critical values for each group of destinations.
