Estrogen Receptors in Human Pulp Tissue
The aim of this study was to evaluate the expression of estrogen receptors α (ERs) in human pulp tissue. Tissue samples were collected from 51 teeth, extracted for orthodontic reasons or from endodonticly treated teeth. Immunohistochemical staining was performed with mouse anti-human estrogen receptor α 1D5 (Dako) using the alkaline phosphatase anti-alkaline phosphatase (APAAP) technique. Immunohistochemical reactivity was semiquantitatively assessed and scored on an intensity scale of 0 to 3. ERs were found in odontoblasts, endothelial cells, and Schwann cells. According the statistical analysis ERs are commonly found in odontoblasts (1.3– 1.6) and in endothelial cells (1.0-1.4), while in Schwann cells they are somewhat rare (0.7-1.1). The difference in expression of ERs was not found between patients of the different age groups. Regarding the gender, the difference in reactivity was observed in Schwann cells which showed higher reactivity in female pulps. The results of this study confirmed the expression of estrogen receptors α in the human dental pulp.
