Turkish Poems in the Poetry Collection by Miho Martelini of Ragusa
This paper analyzes the Turkish poems from the multilingual Collection of poems, compiled by Miho Martelini of Ragusa (The Republic of Dubrovnik) in 1657. Martelini's Collection contains two volumes consisting of collections of poems in Croatian, Turkish and Italian. All the texts in these three languages are written in Italian Latin-script alphabet, with the exception of a poem composed in a mixture of Turkish and Croatian, which is written in Bosnian Cyrillic alphabet. The Turkish poems from the Martelini's Collection are especially interesting for research in Turkology due to their "folk" character, a multitude of archaic Turkish words and dialectalisms. Since they are recorded in Latin transcription, they represent an extremely valuable source for philological and linguistic research. On the basis of the transcribed version of the Turkish poems from Martelini's Collection, this paper will attempt to determine if the poems were originally composed in the language close to the official Ottoman Turkish from the 17th century, or in the so-called “folk” Turkish dialect used by the non-turkophonic population of the Ottoman Bosnia.
