Structural variety of heterometallic [CuIICrIII] oxalate- and chloranilate-bridged compounds containing different N-donor ligands
The search for new molecule-based magnets is a very active area in advanced materials, since they offer unique design possibilities, from a wise selection of the molecular building blocks, crystal structures exhibiting cooperative magnetism and even the combination of magnetism with a second property of interest. Enormous efforts are made in synthesizing of new heterometallic coordination polymers of 1D, 2D, and 3D structures. In the design and synthesis of heteropolynuclear complexes an important role belongs to the oxalate ion, C2O42−, because of its various possibilities of coordination to metal centers as well as its ability to mediate magnetic interactions between paramagnetic metal ions. Stable mononuclear anionic oxalate complexes as tris(oxalato)metalate anions, [MIII(C2O4)3]3− (MIII = Mn, Cr, Fe, V), are often used as ligands toward another metal ion for the preparation of extended multifunctional systems. This can be also accomplished by using larger bridging ligands as the dianion of 2, 5-dihydroxy-1, 4-benzoquinone and its derivatives [C6O4X22− = X2An2− (X = H, F, Cl, Br, I, NO2, OH, CN, etc.)] which show coordination modes similar to the oxalate group and provide some additional advantages. The layering technique was used as a method for the preparation of the single crystals of heteropolynucler [CuIICrIII] complexes 1─4. Green prismatic crystals of compound {; ; ; ; ; ; [Cu(bpy)Cr(C2O4)3Cu2(bpy)2(C2O4)(CH3OH)(H2O)][Cu(bpy)Cr(C2O4)3]·4H2O}; ; ; ; ; ; n (1) were obtained from the reaction of an aqueous solution of K3[Cr(C2O4)3]·3H2O and a mixture methanol/dichloromethane (1 : 1) containing CuCl2·2H2O and 2, 2'-bipyridine (bpy). Structure consists of one-dimensional (1D) cationic [Cu(bpy)Cr(C2O4)3Cu2(bpy)2(C2O4)(CH3OH)(H2O)]nn+ and anionic [Cu(bpy)Cr(C2O4)3]nn− oxalate-bridged chains, containing two different bridging modes of the oxalate ligands between CuII and CrIII − bis(bidentate) and mono-bidentate. From the reaction of an aqueous solution of the same building block and a methanol solution of Cu(NO3)2·3H2O and 2, 2′:6′, 2′′-terpyridine (terpy) green prismatic crystals of salt [Cu(H2O)3(terpy)][Cu(H2O)(terpy)Cr(C2O4)3]2∙7H2O (2) were formed, containing mononuclear [Cu(H2O)3(terpy)]2+ cation and two symmetry independent oxalate-bridged dinuclear [Cu(H2O)(terpy)Cr(C2O4)3]− anions. Dark red rod-like crystals of a 1D zigzag chloranilate-bridged coordination polymer {; ; ; ; ; ; [(n-Bu)4N][Cu(bpy)Cr(Cl2An)3]}; ; ; ; ; ; n (3) were grown from the reaction of an acetonitrile solution of [(n-Bu)4N]3[Cr(Cl2An)3], used instead of oxalate precursor salt, and an aqueous solution containing CuCl2·2H2O and bpy. The change of aromatic N-donor ligand from bpy to imidazole (im) in the same reaction, influenced the reaction outcome − black polyhedra of trinuclear chloranilate-bridged complex [(n-Bu)4N]4[Cu(im)2Cr2(Cl2An)6] (4). In addition to the single crystal X-ray diffraction study, characterization of the new complexes has been accomplished by means of the IR spectroscopy and thermal analysis.
