Methodology for Virtual Reality Design of Kvarner Guc Towards Preserving Croatian Shipbuilding Heritage

The north Adriatic coastal area was always rich with small shipyards ; of which some have developed into a significant industry. In such shipyards, wooden shipbuilding was cherished where lots of small boats with characteristic shapes were constructed. There has also been a distinctive form of hull like the Kvarner Guc. Today, in Croatia, within the framework of various European projects, the traditional shipbuilding heritage is recognized as a valuable educational and tourist content and used in the development of contemporary tourism, and in this way, the knowledge and skills of Croatian naval shipbuilding are adequately preserved and archived. In this regard, the authors propose a methodology based on the application of modern techniques and tools for the virtual description of traditional characteristic hull forms based on photogrammetry and virtual reality. Therefore, the proposed photogrammetry method for digitizing the existing object in real-size is proposed, and the tools for virtual reality support are suggested. This methodology was tested on an example from the segment of shipbuilding cultural heritage. Based on a preserved specimen of the Kvarner Guc from 19th cent. With the proposed methodology, a digital 3D hull model has been designed, and the virtual reality technique has been applied to make such object a real intimate experience, where authors recognize and propose using such a model as an innovative educational and tourist content.
