The Role of Think Tanks in Modeling Sustainable Development Policy

Think tank is an organization that conducts research in one of the public policy sectors and often engages in advocating this (researched) public policy. The areas of public policy are in range of international relations, economic development and business, social policy or political strategy to military technology and various issues of cultural creativity. The largest number of such organizations is of a non-profit character and many countries (eg USA and Canada) are so social subjects to non-taxable status. Think tanks can be linked to political parties, governments, interest groups or businesses or formed as independent non-governmental organizations. These institutions often act as a bridge between academia and political communities, serve public interest as independent voice that is applied and fundamental research translates into language and form understandable, reliable and accessible to politicians and the public. Main products of these organizations are: books, monographs, reports, briefings, conferences, and seminars, formal and informal discussions with politicians, state officials and key public policy stakeholders. While in developed democracy countries and developed economies think tanks are numerous - in Croatia, the situation with tinkers is very poor ; according to the number of think tanks as well as their influence on public policies, of Croatia has not moved far from the transition period in this sector. It can even be said that Croatia is the issue among the worst transition countries. This paper presents examples of public policies in the Republic of Croatia which would be beneficial if the state and local authorities were to use co-operation with think tanks when adopting public policies - particularly in the area of sustainable development.
