Determinants of Dunning Kruger effects in the area of general knowledge in gymnasium graduates
The Dunning Kruger effect is a tendency in which people who performed poorly overestimate their performance and people who performed well underestimate it (Kruger & Dunning, 1999). The goals of this research were to look in to the determinates of the Dunning Kruger effect, examine the correlations between them and explore the difference between global and specific self-perception of knowledge. The determinates included gender, the average grade, the Impostor phenomenon (Clance IP scale ; Clance, 1985), the Core self-evaluation trait (The Core self-evaluation scale ; Judge, Locke & Durham, 1997) and general knowledge (a 50- item test constructed for the purposes of this study). Participants were asked to globally (How would you generally estimate your general knowledge from 1 to 7?) and specifically (How would you estimate your general knowledge in comparison to your peers?) estimate their general knowledge. The Dunning Kruger effect was defined as the difference between the estimates on the item that measured the specific self-perception and the result obtained on the test of general knowledge. The participants were gymnasium graduates from three gymnasiums in Zagreb (N= 107). The results were the following: global self- perception of knowledge was significantly lower than the specific, 57.16% of the participants who achieved poorest results were overestimating themselves while 28.58% of the best ones were underestimating themselves. The average grade and the Core self-evaluation traits were significant predictors of the Dunning Kruger effect explaining 12% of variance of the Dunning Kruger effect.
