Enterprise Resource Planning systems in the context of Industry 4.0

Today’s global emerging markets present manufacturing companies with ever-growing competition and increasingly demanding customers, meaning that an organization’s focus on development and growth through the implementation of new innovative technologies is more important than ever. Industry 4.0 includes innovative technologies such as Cloud Computing, Internet of Things (IoT), Big Data, Cyber-Physical Systems, and Intelligent Processes and Products. The reasoning behind the implementation of these innovative technologies is to prompt a response to increasingly complex customer demands for individualized products, which will inevitably lead to heightened competitiveness in an increasingly dynamic and progressively more and more complex market. Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) based organizations help to reduce market failures and enhance a firm's performance. Enterprise Resource Planning is thus the backbone of manufacturing companies ; with its stable vertical and horizontal integration significantly increasing the speed of the execution of processes through real-time access to data and intelligent data analysis. ERP systems must facilitate real-time decision-making and, as such, the integration of an ERP system is crucial in the context of Industry 4.0. This article seeks to review current trends and assess the influence that they may have on industrial development ; to present the features and advantages of modern ERP systems in the context of Industry 4.0 ; and to formulate a framework for possible application in Croatian manufacturing companies. The article begins with a bibliometric literature review and goes on to discuss and demonstrate a PEST framework and an ERP model based on the case of Croatia. Following the conclusion, the paper offers recommendations for further research within a research agenda.
