The relationship between competences in education for sustainable development and personality traits among Croatian teachers

Contemporary research on the quality teachers is complete when one succeeds in taking into account explicit and implicit pedagogy with the equal importance. In other words, besides exploring needed competences for successful and efficient educational work with children, it is necessary to explore teachers’ personality traits as well. So, this principle could be recognized in this study which is aimed to explore the relationship between competencies in education for sustainable development (CESD) and personality traits among Croatian primary school teachers. For the purposes of this study, two measures have been applied: Competences in Education for Sustainable Development for measuring three dimensions (Communication and Relationships ; Thinking and Action and Formulation of Didactic-Methodical Aspects and Content of Educational Practices including Behavior) and Ten Item Personality Inventory for measuring extraversion, emotional stability, conscientiousness, agreeableness and openness to experience. This research was run as a part of the wider, university project and it was conducted on the national representative sample of 1195 Croatian primary school teachers. As it was supposed, the significant positive correlation was determined between all three dimensions of the CESD and all personality traits – the highest positive correlation was determined with conscientiousness and openness to experience. In other words, teachers who showed significantly higher all three dimensions of the CESD, they are significantly more extraverted, emotional stable, conscientiousness, agreeable and open to new experience. The following regression analyses revealed that all personality traits are significant positive predictors of all three dimensions of the CESD with the highest predictors power of previously mentioned two personality traits. Determined findings are discussed within the frame of enhancing relevant study programs and programs of professional development with continuing in further scientific research about this important subject.
