Renewable Energy Consumption-Economic Growth Nexus: A Nonparametric Evidence for Developing, Graduated Developing and Developed European Union Countries

This study empirically investigates the relationship between economic growth and renewable energy consumption within the data envelopment analysis (DEA) framework. The research spans the period from 1995 to 2012, and employs six energy and non-energy indicators based on which the relative efficiency of 28 European Union (EU) countries is assessed. The results imply a strong divergence both within and among the three subgroups of countries (developing, graduated developing and developed), also pointing to inefficiency sources and their magnitude. Renewable energy consumption appears as a major contributor to inefficiency. The findings should assist policy makers in their attempts to improve energy related decisions.
