Democratic vs. Autocratic Environment for the Global Fake News
In the present moment, diagnosed by Foreign Affairs as „the Age of Insecurity“, „the world is experiencing the most severe democratic setback since the rise of fascism in the 1930s“. The US financial crisis, developed in the world economic crisis 2008-2015 (even longer in some countries), served as accelerator to the authoritarian transformation of several formally still democratic countries. Generating fears is a common drive fuel for such a transformation. The present moment is characterised by the spreading of the fake news too. The fake news is not a new-born phenomenon. Yet there is an impression that this phenomenon has never been as widespread as the last few years. The connection between fake news spread and dissemination of information technology was discussed. Technology is, as usual, instrument, and the reason for the spread of fake news in such quantity is seen primarily in anti- democratic tendencies.
