Adhesion of PACVD Coatings on Nanostructured Cemented Carbides
Samples of nanostructured hardmetals containing 10% wt. Co were sintered as a substrate material by sinter-HIP process. The starting powders had an average grain size dBET in the range from 95 nm, and nano grain size was confirmed after sintering. PACVD coating process due to its lower deposition temperature was used for the production of the coating, and a multilayer gradient coating system consisting of TiN and TiCN was produced. Preparation of the surface prior to coating was done in order to achieve better mechanical interlocking of the coating to the substrate surface, and included high sputtering parameters in order to break out the Co binder. In order to quantify the primary demand for a quality coating system that is high coating adhesion, scratch tests were conducted by drawing a Rockwell C diamond stylus. Linear increasing load ranging from 5 to 200 N, was applied across the sample surface, and critical loads of coating delamination were registered. Nanostructured cemented carbides showed a good potential as a substrate material for PACVD coatings.
