Impact of locality on fatty acids composition of the mediterranean mussel (Mytilus galloprovincialis)

Mediterranean mussel (Mytilus galloprovincialis) is an important commercial species cultivated in the Adriatic Sea. Based on the literature data, it is known that metabolic activities of shellfish molluscs are the result of complex interactions, mainly of food availability, environmental and growth factors. This study was designed to assess the variations in the fatty acids profile of Mediterranean mussels cultivated on different localities in the Istrian part of the Adriatic Sea. Sampling was made on three localities (nine samples per each) during the summer 2017. Fatty acid methyl esters (FAMEs) were analysed using gas chromatography (GC-FID) proceeded by the extraction of total fat using the standardized Soxhlet method. Predominant FAMEs determined in mussels were saturated (SFA) (66.97±11.25%), followed by monounsaturated (MUFA) (19.25±3.32%), and polyunsaturated (PUFA) (13.78±10.27%) fatty acids. The study results showed the highest representation of three FAMEs: palmitic acid (C16:0) (42.87±2.25%), stearic acid (C18:0) (15.70±4.30%), and oleic acid (C18:1n-9C) (9.01±1.61%). Fatty acid composition significantly varied (p < 0.05) according to the locality of cultivation, both when it comes to the representation of individual fatty acids and fatty acid groups, which can be attributed to the high influence of the cultivation parameters and environmental conditions related to the area of cultivation on Mediterranean mussel nutritional quality.
